Detoxification

One basic principle of orthomolecular psychiatry is “good things in and bad things out.” Healing can move forward only when both processes are improving. Detoxification from heavy metals, synthetic chemicals, and autotoxins improves the healing potential of nutritional supplements, and for some people may be the most important aspect of recovery.

The question in detoxification is not that it needs to be done, but how to do it without destabilizing the patient. Too rough or powerful a detoxification can cause many unpleasant consequences including insomnia, irritability, anxiety, and even psychosis.  So, it is often best to detoxify through the gastrointestinal system, skin, or lymph systems.  In addition, it may be helpful to support the liver, spleen, kidneys, and gastrointestinal systems, by optimizing their functioning through glandular supplements.

When lowering toxicity through diet changes, it is helpful to work on reducing and eliminating refined foods and sugar. Many patients with undiagnosed negative hypersensitivity reactions to wheat and dairy demonstrate improved mental health and functioning by cutting down on wheat and dairy products.

A biological dentist may be helpful in safely removing metal fillings that may be a source of mercury toxicity.

On another level, many experiences can result in toxic emotional reactions that refuse to dissipate. These toxic emotions can come in the form of rage, sadness, hopelessness, resentment, jealously, low self-esteem or self-hatred. Working on releasing these toxic emotions can be just as important and helpful as releasing biochemical toxins. Forgiveness, love, compassion, insight and growth are the fruits of healing from traumas and letting go of damaging emotions and thoughts. With energy psychology and psychotherapy, toxic emotions can be easily and efficiently eliminated.
